What Is a Satoshi?
A Satoshi (often abbreviated as "sat") is the smallest unit of Bitcoin recorded on the blockchain. It is named after Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin. Just as a dollar is divided into 100 cents, a Bitcoin is divided into 100 million satoshis. How to Convert Satoshis to USD
Converting satoshis to dollars takes two steps. First, convert satoshis into Bitcoin using Bitcoin's fixed ratio. Second, multiply by the BTC price in dollars:
- 1 BTC = 100,000,000 satoshis. This ratio is fixed by Bitcoin's protocol and never changes.
- BTC amount = satoshis ÷ 100,000,000. For example, 10,000 sats ÷ 100,000,000 = 0.0001 BTC.
- USD value = BTC amount × BTC price in USD. If BTC trades at $100,000, then 0.0001 BTC × $100,000 = $10.
At an illustrative BTC price of $100,000, 10,000 satoshis equal 0.0001 BTC, or $10. This example is not a live price.
How Many Satoshis Are in One Bitcoin?
There are exactly 100,000,000 (one hundred million) satoshis in a single Bitcoin. This extreme divisibility allows Bitcoin to be used as a global medium of exchange, even if the price of a full Bitcoin rises into the millions of dollars.
Why Bitcoin Uses Smaller Units
Divisibility is a key property of money. By dividing Bitcoin into such small units, the network ensures that value can be transferred in almost any denomination. This is particularly important for the Lightning Network, which enables nearly instant, low-fee payments for everyday items like coffee or digital content.
